MONTHLY WEATHER SUMMARY – NOVEMBER 2016

The Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications’ Meteorological Directorate reported in its monthly weather summary that the month of November 2016

Was slightly warmer than normal in temperatures with above average precipitation and below average relative humidities and wind speed.

The mean temperature of the month was 24.8°C which is 0.5°C above the long-term normal whereas the mean maximum temperature of the month was 27.9°C. The highest temperature recorded in the month was 33.9°C on the 2nd of November at Bahrain International Airport and  34.3°C on the 2nd and 3rd of November at Sitra Island. During the month, Bahrain had 4 days with maximum temperatures exceeding 30°C. The mean minimum temperature of the month was 22.1°C with the lowest temperature recorded 18.2°C on the 25th of November at Bahrain International Airport and 15.9°C on the 14th of November at Durrat Al Bahrain.

The mean relative humidity for November was 67% whereas the mean maximum relative humidity for the month was 82%. Meanwhile, the mean minimum relative humidity for November was 48%.

Total precipitation of 47.6 mm fell over 4 days in November with trace amount recorded on the 24th of November. This total goes on record as the eighth highest monthly total precipitation for the month of November since 1902 and is 13 times more than the long-term normal for November. The highest monthly rainfall ever recorded for the month of November was 146.8 mm which occurred in November 1940. 

The 25th of November was recorded as the highest day of precipitation with 41.7 mm. This goes on record as the second highest daily total rainfall for November since 1948 which was only exceeded on the 19th  of November in 2000 which was 57.6 mm. An additional 3.0 mm fell on the 26th, 2.4 mm on the 27th and 0.5 mm on the 28th November to make the total precipitation of 47.6 mm at Bahrain International Airport.

The total precipitation for November 2016 at Sitra Isalnd was 35.8 mm with the highest day with precipitation of 20.8 mm falling on the 26th of November. The total precipitation for November 2016 at Durrat Al Bahrain was 20.0 mm with the highest precipitation of 9.8 mm falling on the 26th of November. The total precipitation for November 2016 at King Fahd Causeway was 13.6 mm with the highest precipitation of 5.6 mm recorded on the 25th of November.

Thunderstorms occurred on 2 days and which were reported at Bahrain International Airport on the 25th of November where visibility dropped to 400 meters due to Thundery showers which produced a daily total precipitation of 41.7 mm with gusts reaching 32 knots at the airport.  This unsettled weather occurred due to a deep upper trough which moved from the Mediterranean Sea towards Saudi Arabia and the Arabian Gulf and led to the formation of clouds that produced the thundery showers over the kingdom. 

Northwesterly winds accounted for 42% of the observation and 14% of the wind observed was prevailing from east to southeast direction with gusts reaching 32 knots on the 25th of November at Bahrain International Airport. 

Fog affected the kingdom on the 19th of November reducing visibility to 200 meters at Bahrain International Airport.
