MONTHLY WEATHER SUMMARY –APRIL 2020

The Ministry of  Transportation and Telecommunications’ Meteorological Directorate reported in their monthly weather summary that the month of  April 2020, was warmer than normal in temperatures with above-average precipitation.

The mean temperature of the month was 27.0°C which is 2.0°C above the long-term normal and this goes on record as the fifth-highest mean temperatures for April since 1902. This is same as April 1999 and exceeded by April 2017 with a record of 27.6°C, April 2000 & 2014 with a record of 27.4°C, April 2001 with a record of 27.2°C and April 2010 with a record of 27.1°C.

The mean maximum temperature of the month was 31.3°C which is 2.2°C above the long-term normal. The highest temperature recorded during the month was 41.1°C which occurred on the 25th April at Bahrain International Airport and this goes on as the third-highest maximum temperature for April since 1946 at Bahrain International Airport and exceeded by 20th April 1949 with a record of 41.7°C and 21st April 2000 with a record of 41.3°C.

The highest temperature recorded in April at Bahrain International Circuit was 41.5°C on the 25th April.

The mean minimum temperature of the month was 23.7°C which is 2.2°C above the long-term normal and this goes on record as the third highest mean minimum temperatures for April since 1946 and exceeded by April 2010 and 2017 with a record of 24.1°C and April 2014 & 2018 with a record of 23.9°C. The lowest temperature recorded was 19.1°C set on the 1st April at Bahrain International Airport but recorded 18.0°C at same night in Durrat Al Bahrain.

A total of 13.7 mm of precipitation was reported in April 2020 at Bahrain International Airport. Trace amounts were recorded on the 1st, 5th, 11th, 21st, 22nd, 25th, 26th and 29th April. Note that the long-term average total precipitation for April is 10.0 mm. The highest monthly total precipitation ever recorded during April at Bahrain International Airport was 69.9 mm which occurred in 1961.

The total precipitation recorded for April 2020 at Bahrain International Circuit was 22.2 mm whereas the total precipitation at Sitra Island was 19.0 mm, at King Fahd Causeway was 18.6 mm and at Durrat Al Bahrain was 18.2 mm.

April month is considered as transitional season period from winter to summer which usually associated with unsettled weather known locally as (Al-Sarrayat) which extends up to mid-May.

The mean relative humidity for April was 55% whereas the mean maximum relative humidity was 72% and the mean minimum relative humidity was 36%.

The Easterly to Southeasterly winds accounted for 36%. Northwesterly winds accounted for only 15% of the observation with gusts reaching 35 knots on the 29th April at Bahrain International Airport.

Dust affected the Kingdom of Bahrain on the 26th and 29th April reduced the visibility to 3000 meters at Bahrain International Airport.
