MONTHLY WEATHER SUMMARY –DECEMBER 2019

The Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications’ Meteorological Directorate reported in their monthly weather summary that the month of December 2019 was warmer than normal in temperatures and above-average precipitation.

The Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications’ Meteorological Directorate reported in their monthly weather summary that the month of December 2019 was warmer than normal in temperatures and above-average precipitation.

The month was wet with 7 rainy days, accumulating 25.3 mm of precipitation at Bahrain International Airport and this is two times more than the long-term normal for December which is 10.9 mm. Note that the highest monthly rainfall ever recorded during December was 119.6 mm which occurred in 2006.

The highest day with precipitation was 8.8 mm fell on the 15th December at Bahrain International Airport. Note that the highest daily rainfall ever recorded during December was 41.6 mm which occurred on 10th December 1974 at Bahrain International Airport.

The total monthly precipitation recorded for December 2019 at Sitra Island was 31.2 mm, whereas total precipitation at King Fahd Causeway was 26.4 mm, at Bahrain International Circuit was 22.4 mm and at Durrat Al Bahrain was 18.6 mm.

The mean temperature of the month was 21.4°C which is 2.2°C above the long-term normal for December and this goes on record as the fifth-highest mean monthly temperatures for December since 1902. Note that the highest mean temperatures recorded in Bahrain for December was 22.5°C occurred in December 2001.

The mean maximum temperature of the month was 23.8°C which is 1.5°C above the long-term normal.

The highest temperature recorded during the month was 28.6°C which occurred on the 2nd December at Bahrain International Airport. 

The mean minimum temperature of the month was 19.0°C which is 2.8°C above the long-term normal and this also goes on record as the third highest mean minimum temperatures for the month of December since 1946. Note that the highest mean monthly minimum temperatures recorded in Bahrain for December was 19.6°C occurred in December 2001.

The lowest temperature recorded was 15.5°C set on the 25th December at Bahrain International Airport but recorded 13.4°C on the 24th December at Durrat Al Bahrain. 

The mean relative humidity for December was 67% whereas the mean maximum relative humidity was 80% and the mean minimum relative humidity was 50%.

The Westerly to Northwesterly winds accounted 50% with gusts reaching 28 knots on the 19th December at Bahrain International Airport but recorded 29 knots on the 17th December at King Fahd Causeway.
