The Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications (MTT) is proud to announce the launch of a single commemorative stamp, with HM King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa's image, marking the centennial anniversary of the arrival of the first aircraft in the country 1918-2018.

On this occasion, the Kingdom of Bahrain is commemorating this historic milestone and MTT’s Bahrain Post has designed the stamp with an inspired recreation of the image of the aircraft that made this pioneering journey.

The Kingdom of Bahrain has a long-standing history dating back centuries, as the centre of civilisations due to its strategic location between East and West, which historically served as a gateway and in more recent times, as a transportation hub for the region.

In December 1918, Bahrain marked a historic first, with the arrival of the first registered flight, a Royal Air Force bomber, which was on a mission to explore the possibility of transporting government mail between London and Kolkata, India and developing it even further to reach Australia. Having recognised the importance of air transport in 1916, British aircraft would cross the region during World War I (1914-1918), and with their first flight to Bahrain, the country soon became a transit gateway for commercial flights between Britain and India and an air bridge linking Europe, East Asia and some countries of the region. Imperial Airways, known today as British Airways, was formed in 1923, by merging a few airlines, supported by the British government, and started air routes across the Gulf.

Concurrently, in the early 1930s, the Kingdom of Bahrain started to emerge as an important international centre for aviation, with commercial aircraft services playing a vital role in stimulating the development of Bahrain's economy, which at the time had the most advanced and developed airport in the Gulf region.  This paved the way for the Kingdom of Bahrain to become a major transit hub for flights between Europe and the Far East.

Today, 100 years later, Bahrain continues to hold an important position in the global aviation industry, providing commercial aviation services, which has strengthened  its role as a gateway to the region, with an aviation industry that is undergoing a major infrastructure upgrade through the Airport Modernisation Programme,  which is expected to accommodate around 14 million passengers annually upon its completion.

The Bahrain International Airshow is considered to be a critical part of Bahrain’s modern aviation developments, enabling the attraction of foreign direct investment in aviation and contributing to the economic development of the Kingdom.

The airshow, which is the fastest growing airshow in the region, has in fact succeeded in becoming an important event on the international aviation calendar due to its strong B2B programme.

The new 100 year of aviation stamp is available in denominations of 400 fils and Souvenir Sheet at a price of 0.750 fils. The stamps are available at all Bahrain Post branches.
