MONTHLY WEATHER SUMMARY – JANUARY 2023

The month of January 2023 was slightly warmer than normal in temperatures and above average precipitation

The Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications’ Meteorological Directorate reported in their monthly weather summary that the month of  January 2023 was slightly warmer than normal in temperatures and above average precipitation.
 
The month was wet with 11 rainy days, accumulating 53.3 mm of precipitation at Bahrain International Airport and this goes on record as the eighth highest monthly total rainfall for January since 1902. This was approximately three times more than the long-term normal for January which is 18.1 mm. Note that the highest monthly total rainfall recorded was in January 1959 and it was 135.9 mm.

The highest day with precipitation was 19.8 mm fell on the 5th January at Bahrain International Airport. Note that the highest daily total of precipitation for January was 49.1 mm which occurred on 22nd January 1959.
 
The total monthly precipitation recorded for January 2023 at the Horat A’ali was 72.2 mm whereas the total precipitation at Bahrain International Circuit was 71.0 mm, at the University of Bahrain was 70.6 mm, at Durrat Al Bahrain was 67.4 mm, at Sitra Island was 63.6 mm and at King Fahad Causeway was 48.8 mm.

The mean temperature of the month was 18.0°C which is 0.5°C above the long-term normal for January which is 17.5°C.

The mean maximum temperature of the month was 20.1°C which is 0.6°C below the long-term normal. The highest temperature recorded during the month was 24.4°C which occurred on the 17th January at Bahrain International Airport and also recorded 24.4°C on the 31st January at the University of Bahrain.
 
The mean minimum temperature of the month was 15.7°C which is 1.2°C above the long-term normal.
 
The temperatures were below average from 10th January to 12th January due to the Northwesterly winds and the cloudy conditions affecting the Kingdom on these days, and the rain showers associated with some days.
 
The lowest temperature recorded was 13.4°C on the 12th January at Bahrain International Airport but was recorded 11.3°C on the same night at Durrat Al Bahrain
 
Note that the lowest temperature ever recorded in the Kingdom of Bahrain was on 20th January 1964, which was 2.7°C at Bahrain International Airport.
 
The mean relative humidity for January was 71% whereas the mean maximum relative humidity was 82% and the mean minimum relative humidity was 60%. The maximum relative humidity was 93% recorded on the 16th and 17th January 2023 and the minimum relative humidity was 25% recorded on the 30th January 2023.
 
The total hours of sunshine for the month were 176.2 hours. Note that the highest monthly total hours of sunshine for January was 286.2 hours recorded in 2021.
 
The Mean wind speed for January was 9 knots. The prevailing wind was 36% from the Northwest direction. Gust winds reached 32 knots on the 17th January at Bahrain International Airport but recorded 34 knots on the same day at King Fahad causeway. The Easterly to Southeasterly winds accounted for 21% of the observation
