MONTHLY WEATHER SUMMARY – MAY 2019

The Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications’ Meteorological Directorate reported in their monthly weather summary that the month of May 2019 goes on record as the fifth hottest May ever experienced in Bahrain since 1902.

The mean temperature of the month was 32.0°C which is 2.2°C above the long-term normal for May and this goes on record as the fifth highest mean temperatures for the month of May since 1902. This is same as May 2016 and exceeded by May 2012 with a record of 32.8°C, May 2017 with a record of 32.6°C, May 2014 & 2015 with a record of 32.4°C and May 2011 with a record of 32.2°C.

The mean maximum temperature of the month was 36.9°C which is 2.8°C above the long-term normal and this goes on record as the seventh highest mean maximum temperatures for the month of May since 1946. This is same as May 2011 and exceeded by May 2012 with a record of 37.9°C, May 2015 with a record of 37.4°C, May 2007 with a record of 37.3°C, May 2014 with a record of 37.2°C, May 2006 & 2008 with a record of 37.1°C and May 2017 with a record of 37.0°C.

During the month Bahrain had 7 days with maximum temperature exceeding 40°C. The highest temperature recorded during the month was 43.8°C which occurred on the 29th May at Bahrain International Airport but recorded 46.8°C on the 30th May at Bahrain International Circuit.

The mean minimum temperature of the month was 28.2°C which is 2.2°C above the long-term normal this and goes on record as the sixth highest mean minimum temperatures for the month of May since 1946. This is same as May 2009 & 2010 and exceeded by May 2012 with a record of 29.1°C, May 2017 with a record of 29.0°C, May 2014 with a record of 28.7°C, May 2011 with a record of 28.6°C and May 2015 & 2016 with a record of 28.5°C.

The lowest temperature recorded was 24.1°C set on the 1st May at Bahrain International Airport but recorded 21.7°C in the same night at Durrat Al Bahrain.

The mean relative humidity for May was 41% whereas the mean maximum relative humidity was 64% and the mean minimum relative humidity was 22%.

Only trace amounts of precipitation were recorded on 4th, 9th, 18th and 19th May at the Bahrain International Airport, the long-term average total precipitation for the month of May is 1.1 mm. Note that the highest monthly total precipitation ever recorded during May was 12.7 mm recorded on May 1907 at Bahrain International Airport.

The total precipitation recorded for May 2019 at Bahrain International Circuit was 7.0 mm whereas the total precipitation at Durrat Al Bahrain was 5.2 mm, at Sitra Island was 4.0 mm and at King Fahd Causeway was no precipitation recorded.

Northwesterly to Northerly winds accounted 42% of the observation with gusts reaching 37 knots on the 9th May at King Fahd Causeway. Easterly winds accounted 15% of the observation with gusts reaching 30 knots on the 19th May at Bahrain International Airport.

Dust reported on the 14th May. Visibility dropped to 2500 meters at Bahrain International Airport.
