MONTHLY WEATHER SUMMARY –JUNE 2020

The Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications’ Meteorological Directorate reported in their monthly weather summary that the month of  June 2020, was warmer than normal in temperatures with below average relative humidities.

The mean temperature of the month was 34.7°C which is 2.3°C above the long-term normal and this goes on record as the sixth-highest mean temperatures for June since 1902. This is the same as June 2012. Note that the highest mean monthly temperature for June was 36.3°C recorded in 2019.

The mean maximum temperature of the month was 39.0°C which is 2.6°C above the long-term normal and this goes on record as the eighth-highest mean temperatures for June since 1946. This is the same as June 1997, 2008, 2010 and 2012. Note that the highest mean monthly maximum temperature for June was 40.9°C recorded in 2019.

During the month Bahrain had 10 days with maximum temperature exceeded 40°C. The highest temperature recorded during the month was 43.3°C which occurred on the 29th June at Bahrain International Airport. Note that the highest temperature recorded for June at Bahrain International Airport was 46.6°C which occurred on 20th June 2010.

The highest temperature recorded in the month at Bahrain International Circuit was 47.8°C on the 3rd June and at Durrat Al Bahrain was 46.8°C on the same day.

The mean minimum temperature of the month was 31.0°C which is 2.2°C above the long-term normal and this goes on record as the sixth-highest mean temperatures for June since 1946. This is the same as June 2009 and 2015. Note that the highest mean monthly minimum temperature for June was 32.4°C recorded in 2018.

The lowest temperature recorded was 28.3°C set on the 10th June at Bahrain International Airport but recorded 25.4°C on the 20th June at Durrat Al Bahrain.

The mean relative humidity for June was 44% whereas the mean maximum relative humidity was 65% and the mean minimum relative humidity was 26%. The maximum relative humidity was 91% recorded on the 1st and the minimum relative humidity was 10% recorded on the 29th.

June 2020 was the sunniest month for all June’s since the sunshine records began in 1968. The total hours of sunshine for the month was 374.8 hours. The old record was 371.4 hours which was recorded in June 2017.

The Northwesterly winds accounted for 57% with gusts reaching 36 knots on the 17th June at Bahrain International Airport and Sitra Island. This is due to the seasonal Indian low developed over Northern India, central and southern parts of Pakistan and extended into the Arabian Gulf leading to Northwesterly winds which is known locally as (Al-Barreh) and established on the 4th June.
