MONTHLY WEATHER SUMMARY –MAY 2021

The Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications’ Meteorological Directorate reported in their monthly weather summary that the month of  May 2021 goes on record as the hottest May ever experienced in Bahrain since 1902.

The mean temperature of the month was 33.5°C which is 2.4°C above the long-term normal for May and this goes on record as the highest mean monthly temperature for May since 1902. The old record was 32.8°C recorded in May 2012.

The mean maximum temperature of the month was 38.9°C which is 2.8°C above the long-term normal and this goes on record as the highest mean maximum temperature for May since 1946. The old record was 37.9°C recorded in May 2012.

During the month Bahrain had 10 days with maximum temperature exceeded 40°C. The highest temperature recorded during the month was 44.4°C which occurred on the 25th May at Bahrain International Airport but recorded 45.7°C on the 22nd May at Bahrain International Circuit.

The mean minimum temperature of the month was 28.9°C which is 1.7°C above the long-term normal and this goes on record as the third highest mean minimum temperature for May since 1946 and exceeded by May 2012 with a record of 29.1°C and May 2017 with a record of 29.0°C.

The lowest temperature recorded was 24.8°C set on the 5th May at Bahrain International Airport but recorded 22.7°C on the same night at Durrat Al Bahrain.

The mean relative humidity for May was 37% whereas the mean maximum relative humidity was 62% and the mean minimum relative humidity was 16%. The maximum relative humidity was 80% recorded on the 1st May and the minimum relative humidity was 8% recorded on the 16th, 18th and 22nd May.

Trace amounts of precipitation were recorded on the 2nd and 3rd May at Bahrain International Airport. Note that the long-term mean total precipitation for May is 0.5 mm and the highest monthly rainfall ever recorded during May at Bahrain International Airport was 12.7 mm which occurred in 1907.

The total precipitation for May 2021 at Durrat Al Bahrain 0.2 mm which was recorded on 3rd May.

May 2021 was the sunniest month for all May since the sunshine records began in 1968. The total hours of sunshine for the month was 370.4 hours. The old record was 356.8 hours which was recorded in May 2014.

The Mean wind speed for May was 7 knots. The prevailing wind was 28% from the Northwest direction. Gust winds reached 40 knots on the 3rd May at Bahrain International Airport. The Easterly to Southeasterly winds accounted for 18% of the observation.
