December 2013 was same as the long-term normal in temperatures and wind speed and with below average relative humidities and rainfall.

The mean temperature of the month was 19.2°C. This is same as the long-term normal for December. The mean maximum temperature of the month was 21.9°C.

The highest temperature recorded in the month was 27.7°C set on the 14th December due to a warm southerly winds which dominated during that morning.

The mean minimum temperature of the month was 16.7°C. The lowest temperature recorded was 12.8°C set on the 16th December at Bahrain International Airport due to the cold Northwesterly winds. But recorded 8.4°C at Shakir on the 27th December.

During the month, the Kingdom had 13 days with minimum temperature reached 15°C or less. The mean relative humidity for December was 64%. This goes on record as the second lowest mean monthly relative humidity for December since 1955. This is same as December 2010 and exceeded by December 2011 and 2012 which was 63%.

The mean maximum relative humidity was 77%. This goes on record as the lowest mean monthly maximum relative humidity for December since 1955. This is same as December 2011. The mean minimum relative humidity for the month was 49%. This goes on record as the fourth lowest mean monthly minimum relative humidity for December since 1955 and exceeded by December 2010 which was 46%, December 2008 and 2012 which was 47% and December 2007 and 2011 which was 48%.

December 2013 was the fifth sunniest month for all December’s since the sunshine records began in 1968. The total hours of sunshine was 269.9 hours. This total hours of sunshine was exceeded by December 1996 which was 283.7 hours, December 1990 which was 282.2 hours, December 2011 which was 273.8 hours and December 1999 which was 270.0 hours. Only trace amounts of rain were recorded on 14th, 15th and 16th December at the airport.

The long-term average for December is 10.9 mm. This unsettled weather occurred due to a deep upper trough has moved from the Mediterranean Sea towards Arabian Peninsula produced few drops of rain over the kingdom followed by fresh to strong cold northwesterly winds which reduced the minimum temperature to 12.8°C on the 16th December at the airport and to lower than this in Sothern parts of the kingdom.

Northwesterly winds accounted 55% of the observation with gusts reached 33 knots on the 15th December at the airport.

Mist affected the kingdom on the 2nd December reduced the visibility to 1500 meters at the airport. Also shallow fog patches were reported on the 30th December reduced the visibility to 1500 meters at the airport.
