August 2017 Weather Summary

The Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications’ Meteorological Directorate reported in their monthly weather summary that the month of August 2017 goes on record as the hottest August ever experienced in Bahrain since 1902.

Hot and humid weather dominated the Kingdom of Bahrain during the month of August due to the moist easterly winds. The mean temperature of the month was 36.6°C °C which is 2.6°C above the long-term normal and goes on record as the highest mean monthly temperature for August since 1902. This breaks the old record of 36.5°C which was recorded in August 1998.

The mean maximum temperature of the month was 41.4°C which is 3.4°C above the long term normal and goes on record as the highest mean maximum temperature for August since 1946 with the old record being 41.2°C which was recorded in August 2015.

The highest temperature during the month was 44.6°C which was recorded on the 12th of August at Bahrain International Airport. This goes on record as the ninth highest maximum temperature for August since 1946. It is worth noting that the highest temperature recorded in Bahrain during August was 45.7°C which was recorded on the 9th of August 1993 at Bahrain International Airport.

The highest temperature during the month at Durrat Al Bahrain was 45.2°C which was recorded on the 12th of August.
                   
During the month, Bahrain had 24 days with maximum temperatures exceeding 40°C. This goes on record as the highest number of days with maximum temperatures exceeding 40°C for August since 1946 with the old record being 23 days in August 2015 and 2016.

The mean minimum temperature of the month was 33.2°C which is 2.7°C above the long-term normal and goes on record as the highest mean minimum temperature for August since 1946 with the old record being 33.0°C which was recorded in August 2016.

The lowest temperature was 31.6°C which was recorded on the 31st of August at Bahrain International Airport and 28.9°C on the same night at Durrat Al Bahrain.

The mean relative humidity for August was 59% whereas the mean maximum relative humidity was 77% and the mean minimum relative humidity was 34%.

The Kingdom of Bahrain was effected by few spots of rain in some areas on the 15th and 20th of August which was due to the movement of low level trough in the atmosphere meeting the surface moist easterly winds.

The prevailing wind was 41% from the east direction with gusts reaching 23 knots on the 14th of August at Bahrain International Airport, Durrat Al Bahrain, and King Fahd Causeway.
                 
Haze affected the Kingdom on the 3rd of August which reduced visibility to 3000 meters at the airport.
