The Kingdom of Bahrain today has joined the international community in commemorating the World Meteorological Day, which is held annually on the 23rd of March. This year’ theme “Understanding Clouds” highlights the importance of clouds for weather climate and water.

The World Meteorological Day is observed on the 23rd of March every year and commemorates the coming into force of the convention establishing the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) in 1950. One year later, the WMO became a specialized organization of the UN, and the World Meteorological Day was designated in 1960 to introduce the meteorological national facilities to the people of the world and to showcase the essential contribution of National Meteorological and Hydrological Services to the safety and wellbeing of society.  The themes chosen for World Meteorological Day reflect weather, climate, and water related issues.  The Kingdom of Bahrain joined the WMO in 1980.

On this occasion, Mr. Adel Daham, Director of the Meteorological Directorate at the Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications emphasized the importance of providing ongoing professional development and training to Bahrainis in top-notch training centers to keep abreast of the rapid progress in the latest technologies employed in monitoring weather conditions. He also added that this year’s theme highlights the importance of clouds for weather climate and water, being a central factor in weather observations, forecasts and warnings.

“Clouds are one of the key uncertainties in the study of climate change. It is therefore important for us to better understand how clouds affect the climate and how a changing climate will affect clouds. Clouds play a critical role in the water cycle and shaping the global distribution of water resources” he added.

It is worth noting that World Meteorological Day marks the launch of a new edition of the International Cloud Atlas after the most thorough and far-reaching revision in its long and distinguished history.  The new WMO Atlas is a treasure trove of hundreds of images of clouds, including a few newly classified cloud types. It also features other meteorological phenomena such as rainbows, halos, snow devils and hailstones. The Atlas is now available in a digital format and is accessible via both computers and mobile devices.
