March 2017 Weather Summary

The Ministry's Meteorological Directorate reported in their monthly weather summary that the month of March 2017, was slightly warmer than normal in temperatures and above average precipitation.

The Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications’ Meteorological Directorate  reported in their monthly weather summary that the month of March 2017, was slightly warmer than normal in temperatures and above average precipitation.

The mean temperature of the month was 21.3°C which is 0.3°C above the long-term normal for March which is 21.0°C. The mean maximum temperature of the month was 24.6°C. The highest recorded temperature was 32.2°C which was on the 13th of March at Bahrain International Airport.

The mean minimum temperature of the month was 18.4°C with the lowest recorded temperature of 14.1°C which was on the 1st of March at Bahrain International Airport and 11.7°C on the same night in Durrat Al Bahrain.

The month was wet with 11 rainy days which accumulated 40.5 mm of precipitation at Bahrain International Airport. This goes on record as the tenth highest monthly total rainfall for the month of March at Bahrain International Airport since 1902 and three times more than the long-term normal for March which is 14.0 mm. It is worth noting that the highest monthly total rainfall recorded in March was 139.2 mm which occurred on March 1995.

The highest day with precipitation was 20.3 mm which was on the 23rd of March. An additional                7.2 mm was recorded on the 4th of March, 3.7 mm on the 17th, 2.9 mm on the 20th, 2.2 mm on the 19th, 1.7 mm on the 29th, 1.5 mm on the 2nd, 0.3 mm on the 5th, 0.3 mm on the 14th, 0.2 mm on the 13th and 0.2 mm on the 18th of March which accumulated to the total monthly amount of 40.5 mm. Trace amount were also recorded on additional nine days of March 2017.

Thunderstorms occurred during 12 days. Thundery showers were reported at Bahrain International Airport on the 20th of March accumulating daily total precipitation of 2.9 mm and the visibility dropped to 600 meters at Bahrain International Airport. Moderate thundery showers with hail were also reported on the 24th of March at Bahrain International Airport.

Moderate to heavy rain showers associated with thunderstorm and strong gusts affected the Kingdom on the 23rd of March. This unsettled weather occurred due to the movement of cold upper trough from Mediterranean Sea towards the central parts of Saudi Arabia and  the Arabian Gulf which produced a daily total precipitation of 20.3 mm and gust reaching 29 knots at Bahrain International Airport.

The total precipitation recorded for March 2017 at King Fahd Causeway was 28.2 mm with highest day of precipitation recording 15.4 mm on the 23rd of March. The total precipitation at Sitra Island was 30.0 mm with highest day of precipitation recording 11.4 mm on the 23rd of March. The total precipitation at Durrat Al Bahrain was 16.8 mm with highest day of precipitation recording 6.4 mm fell on 19th of March.
                  
The mean relative humidity for the month of March was 70% whereas the mean maximum relative humidity was 86%. The mean minimum relative humidity for March was 50%.

Northwesterly to Northerly winds accounted for 51% of the observations with gusts reaching 43 knots on the 19th of March at Bahrain International Airport but recorded 46 knots on the same day at King Fahd Causeway. Approximately 29% of the the wind observed was prevailing from east to southeast direction

Dust haze was reported on the 13th of March which reduced visibility to 800 meters at Bahrain International Airport.
