MONTHLY WEATHER SUMMARY – SEPTEMBER 2018

The Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications’ Meteorological Directorate reported in their monthly weather summary that the month of  September 2018 goes on record as the second hottest September ever experienced in Bahrain since 1902.

Hot and humid weather dominated the Kingdom of Bahrain during the month of September due to the moist easterly winds.

The mean temperature of the month was 34.5°C which is 2.1°C above the long-term normal and goes on record as second the highest mean temperatures for the month of September since 1902. This is same as September 1998 & 2015 and only exceeded by September 2017 with a record of 34.6°C.

The mean maximum temperature of the month was 38.9°C which is 2.4°C above the long-term normal and goes on record as the second highest mean maximum temperatures for the month of September since 1946 and only exceeded by September 2017 with a record of 39.1°C.

The highest temperature recorded during the month was 41.5°C which occurred on the 3rd of September at Bahrain International Airport. Note that the highest temperature ever recorded in Bahrain for September was 45.5°C which occurred on 4th September 2013.

The highest temperature recorded in the month at Durrat Al Bahrain was 43.1°C on the 14th of September.

During the month Bahrain had 9 days with maximum temperature exceeding 40°C.

The mean minimum temperature of the month was 31.4°C which is 2.8°C above the long-term normal and goes on record as the second highest mean minimum temperatures for the month of September since 1946 and only exceeded by September 2015 with a record of 31.5°C.

The lowest temperature recorded was 28.9°C set on the 28th of September at Bahrain International Airport but recorded 27.0°C on the 26th of September at Durrat Al Bahrain.

The mean relative humidity for September was 63% whereas the mean maximum relative humidity was 78% and the mean minimum relative humidity was 40%.

Only trace amounts of precipitation were recorded on 30th of September at the Bahrain International Airport. This unsettled weather occurred due to a low level trough which had moved from the Eastern Parts of Saudi Arabia towards the Kingdom. This phenomenon was not occurred since September 1986 where trace amounts of precipitation were reported on 2nd and 3rd of September 1986 at Bahrain International Airport.

The prevailing wind was 34% from east direction with gusts reaching 23 knots on the 3rd of September at Bahrain International Airport. Northwesterly winds accounted 14% of the observation.

Haze affected the Kingdom of Bahrain on the 10th and 11th of September reduced the visibility to 3000 meters at Bahrain International Airport.
