MONTHLY WEATHER SUMMARY –JANUARY 2021

The Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications’ Meteorological Directorate reported in their monthly weather summary that the month of January 2021 was warmer than normal in temperatures and below-average precipitation.

The mean temperature of the month was 19.0°C which is 1.5°C above the long-term normal for January and this goes on record as the fifth-highest mean monthly temperatures for January since 1902. This is same as January 1953 and 1999 and exceeded by January 2019 with a record of 19.7°C, January 2004 with a record of 19.6°C,  January 2010 with a record of 19.2°C and January 1947 with a record of 19.1°C.

The mean maximum temperature of the month was 22.0°C which is 1.3°C above the long-term normal. and this goes on record as the eight-highest mean maximum temperature for January since 1946. Note that the highest mean monthly maximum temperatures recorded in Bahrain for January was 23.1°C occurred in 2004.

The highest temperature recorded during the month was 25.9°C which occurred on the 15th January at Bahrain International Airport and at Bahrain International Circuit.

The mean minimum temperature of the month was 16.0°C which is 1.5°C above the long-term normal and this goes on record as the eight-highest mean minimum temperature for January since 1946. Note that the highest mean monthly minimum temperatures recorded in Bahrain for January was 17.2°C occurred in 2019.

During the month Bahrain had 8 days with minimum temperature below 15°C. The lowest temperature recorded was 13.2°C set on the 28th January at Bahrain International Airport but recorded 10.1°C on the 13th and 14th January at Durrat Al Bahrain.

Note that the lowest temperature ever recorded in the Kingdom of Bahrain was on 20th January 1964, which was 2.7°C at Bahrain International Airport.

Although the temperatures were above the normal in general but the Kingdom of Bahrain had been affected during the period from 21st to 23rd  January by cold wave accompanied by a noticeable decrease in temperature with fresh to strong Northwesterly winds. This was due to a formation of high pressure that holds a cold air mass towards the northern parts of the Arabian Peninsula and the Arabian Gulf.

The Mean wind speed for January was 9 knots. The prevailing wind was 48% from the Northwest direction. Gust winds reached 36 knots on the 21st January at Bahrain International Airport.

The mean relative humidity for January was 66% whereas the mean maximum relative humidity was 80% and the mean minimum relative humidity was 49%. The maximum relative humidity was 94% recorded on the 29th January and the minimum relative humidity was 16% recorded on the 15th.

No precipitation was reported in January 2021. Note that the long-term average total precipitation for January is 18.1 mm. The highest monthly total precipitation recorded during January at Bahrain International Airport was 135.9 mm which occurred in 1959.

January 2021 was the sunniest month for all January since the sunshine records began in 1968. The total hours of sunshine for the month was 286.2 hours. The old record was 282.9 hours which was recorded in January 2015.

Fog affected the Kingdom on the 29th January. Visibility dropped to 300 meters at Bahrain International Airport.
