he Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications organized a workshop on the National Maritime Strategy at the Bahrain Logistics Zone, with broad participation from government entities, private sector organizations, and stakeholders in the maritime transport, logistics, and trade sectors in the Kingdom.
The workshop saw active participation from senior representatives of ministries and government authorities, alongside leaders from the private maritime sector, ports, and logistics companies. The event aimed to achieve a shared vision, propose tangible initiatives, and ensure collective commitment to the implementation steps required to drive the ambitious strategy forward.
During the workshop, His Excellency Dr. Sheikh Abdullah bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, Minister of Transportation and Telecommunications, affirmed that the Kingdom of Bahrain is moving forward with confidence toward building an integrated maritime system that keeps pace with global developments and strengthens the Kingdom’s position as a pivotal hub for trade and logistics services in the region, in line with the goals of Bahrain’s Economic Vision 2030.
His Excellency explained that the National Maritime Strategy represents a comprehensive roadmap aimed at transforming the maritime sector into a driver of national prosperity through the development of infrastructure and port and logistics zone operations, attracting strategic investments, and adopting digital and smart solutions for managing maritime trade and supply chains.
He added that the implementation of the National Maritime Strategy is based on a participatory approach that brings together all relevant public and private sector entities, enhancing institutional integration and translating the vision into actionable projects. He noted that the National Workshop on the Maritime Strategy served as a constructive platform for unifying efforts and formulating national priorities for the maritime sector.
His Excellency emphasized that through these efforts, the Ministry aims to strengthen the sector’s sustainability by applying best environmental practices, developing national capabilities, and promoting technological innovation in automation and AI-based planning — ensuring continued economic growth and the preservation of resources for future generations.
The workshop highlighted six main pillars that provide a comprehensive framework for development and transformation toward an integrated system.
The first pillar focused on maritime infrastructure which aims at providing facilities guided by commercial needs, strengthening and expanding vital corridors between the Kingdom of Bahrain and the Gulf, preparing for the integration of the future railway system, and developing dedicated facilities for cruise ships.
This pillar is complemented by the ports and inland operations component, which seeks to achieve commercially seamless and digitally integrated processes, enhance marine services and port efficiency to increase cargo volumes, and ensure real-time visibility through digital tools.
The operational aspect concluded with the integrated logistics pillar, which aims to build a world-class maritime ecosystem that reinforces Bahrain’s position as a regional and international hub for maritime trade and supply chain sustainability. It also focuses on adopting initiatives and innovations, and promoting the exchange of insights and expertise to advance the maritime sector toward new horizons in line with global best practices.
On the regulatory and financial front, the governance, legislation, and financing pillar highlights the importance of establishing a unified and transparent governance framework, utilizing strategic and smart financing mechanisms to attract private investments, and removing unnecessary barriers to maritime trade — which constitutes 80% of global trade.
Meanwhile, the human capital and innovation pillar focuses on developing a future-ready talent pool through comprehensive upskilling programs, piloting automation, AI-based planning, and green solutions to maintain maritime leadership.
Finally, the sustainability pillar underscores the commitment to building sustainable infrastructure for future generations of trade, establishing green and efficient systems that reduce emissions, and cementing Bahrain’s position as a global maritime hub.
