As part of the Kingdom of Bahrain’s presidency of the 46th session of the Gulf Cooperation Council, HE Dr. Shaikh Abdulla bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, Minister of Transportation and Telecommunications, chaired the extraordinary meeting of the GCC Ministers of Transport and Communications, held via videoconference.
The meeting was attended by ministers and officials responsible for transport, ports and logistics sectors in GCC countries, to review regional developments and their impact on transport movement and supply chains, as well as to discuss means to enhance joint coordination to ensure the smooth flow of goods and passengers across GCC states.
At the outset, the Minister underscored that the meeting is being held amid the continued blatant Iranian attacks on countries in the region, which necessitate strengthening cooperation and reinforcing unity among GCC states. He affirmed that the security of GCC countries is indivisible and that their destinies are shared, stressing the importance of consolidating GCC integration across vital sectors, particularly transport and logistics, to ensure the continuity of supply chains and the smooth movement of shipments, especially strategic goods.
He highlighted the importance of enhancing readiness to address emergency conditions in a manner that safeguards the security and stability of GCC countries, preserves the interests of their peoples, and supports the progress of joint GCC action.
Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi, Secretary General of the GCC, also delivered remarks in which he expressed appreciation for convening the meeting at this time, affirming the importance of continuing joint efforts to develop transport systems across GCC countries and enhance integration in infrastructure and logistics services, in support of economic development and improved connectivity among member states.
He noted that the current phase requires intensified efforts to accelerate joint projects, exchange expertise, and coordinate policies to achieve the shared interests of GCC countries and their peoples.
During the meeting, participants reviewed current operational conditions in land and maritime transport sectors, particularly with regard to freight movement and the transportation of strategic goods. They also discussed the status of border crossings and measures taken to facilitate transit, contributing to maintaining the uninterrupted flow of essential goods and enhancing the efficiency of supply chains across GCC countries.
The ministers also discussed means to activate joint mechanisms, including simplifying procedures at ports and border crossings, utilising alternative transport routes, and strengthening logistical connectivity between ports and border points. They further highlighted the importance of adopting modern technologies to expedite clearance and inspection procedures, ensuring the highest levels of readiness and responsiveness to regional developments.
The meeting affirmed the importance of continuing coordination and consultation among GCC countries and intensifying joint efforts to ensure the sustainability and efficiency of transport and logistics systems, in a manner that strengthens GCC integration and maintains the smooth flow of trade and supply chains during the current phase.
