The GCC Rail Project is an integrated regional project designed to meet the transportation needs of the GCC countries. The project will connect all GCC countries, offering an alternative mode to road, air, and sea transportation. The project is expected to significantly contribute to the region's economic growth, diversify transportation options, and reduce costs. Additionally, it will promote and facilitate regional trade, support national industries within the GCC and neighboring countries, as well as create employment opportunities for GCC nationals, and build the necessary institutional capacity for the development of the railway industry.
The Kingdom of Bahrain will be linked to GCC countries through King Hamad Causeway project, which will connect Bahrain to Saudi Arabia. Running parallel to the King Fahd Causeway, the new 57 km causeway will will include four road lanes and two rail tracks, linking the proposed King Hamad International Station in the Ramli area in Bahrain to Dammam Railway Station in Saudi Arabia.
Dammam Railway Station will serve as a hub connecting all domestic railways in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, whereas the passenger terminal at King Hamad International Railway Station in Ramli will be connect to Bahrain International Airport and other commercial and residential areas in Bahrain through the proposed Bahrain Metro network.
Passenger traffic on the GCC railway is projected to reach approximately t 8 million passengers per year by 2050. The freight yard at King Hamad International Railway Station will also facilitate the transportation of 600,000 containers and 13 million tons of bulk freight.
